Whisper of Weapons by Savannah J. Goins

Queen B’s Decree: Whisper of Weapons was an interesting concept. Teenagers create their own weapons of which they use to call upon or “cast” an animal. Kind of like a familiar, but they have to learn to fight together to be the best…in case of war.

There are a lot of points-of-view here, so it takes a little while to get to know the large cast of characters (cast…pun intended). Our main character is Mella, who grows from the shallow “I want to be part of the rich and popular kids’ clique” to a loyal friend. After she fails spectacularly at the casting ceremony, she finds herself part of a ragtag bunch, who accept her with no questions asked. It’s there she grows and learns the true meaning of friendship.

I loved the world-building and the variability of the characters. Getting the perspective from so many characters made the story more engaging, as I got to see more of what was happening behind the scenes.

The romance was a bit instalove-y, but it was cute and sweet. Lastly, I never expected the twist at the ending but the storyline was so engaging. I’m super ready for the next in the series and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
