Queen B’s Decree: My Darling Dreadful Thing was a book club selection, and it was undeniably out of my normal genres.
It’s very gothic, with kind of Jane Eyre feel, with the main characters stuck in a broken down, country home. I kind of liked the eerie-ness, with the inclusion of the spirits. But I felt like this dragged on for me. It alternates between the physician’s notes regarding Roos and the past events. So I already knew the ultimate outcome. It unquestionably made me less interested in continuing, yet I was still intrigued enough to turn the next page.
The romance seemed out of place, like only “crazy” people would be queer? I just wish it had felt more genuine.
Overall, My Darling Dreadful Thing was a book that took me out of my comfort zone and try something new.
