Deadish by Alex Lancer

Queen B’s Decree: Deadish takes place in a hospital in Glasgow, from the perspective of a couple of general surgery residents and attendings. It really highlights the politics that you see in a hospital and how sometimes it’s less about the patient and more about the bottom line.

Some of the surgical scenes were almost too technical, and a lay person without a healthcare background may find all this information going over their heads. But if you ignore some of the jargon (and I totally apologize to any of my non-healthcare friends, I know this is a problem—so many acronyms 🤣) you can still understand the story and how it affects the characters. Ashley and Chris were my favorite characters, both newbies trying to make it in their last year of training.

Sadly, some of it was all too realistic: the amount of alcohol and drug abuse amongst healthcare workers, the backstabbing and placing blame elsewhere, the egos involved.

Overall, Deadish was an entertaining read, but having a healthcare background was almost necessary to understand the nuances and jargon.
