Read. Reign. Repeat.

A Daughter of Fair Verona by Christina Dodd

Queen B’s Decree: Like many elder Millennials, I had the 1996 Romeo + Juliet on VHS and I watched it over and over. I picked up A Daughter of Fair Verona with my little grabby hands as soon as I saw the heroine was the daughter of the famed Romeo and Juliet and I couldn’t put it down.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but a historical murder mystery was not it. Rosie is their eldest daughter and is basically a withering old spinster at the age of 19. While icky, I appreciate the author staying true to the ages of the original story (Juliet was 13 YIKES). I loved that Rosie is practical, compared to her parents. She’s not into love poetry and she’s basically manipulated her way out of several betrothals.

The murder mystery was very entertaining, and I definitely didn’t expect the bad guy reveal. The romance was not as prevalent, but I liked the bit of a love triangle. I had some hopes towards a certain man, and I was happy to see his actions at the end.

Overall, a very fun read and I’ll be back for more in this series.
