Read. Reign. Repeat.

Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson

Queen B’s Decree: Yellow Wife was the choice for book club, and it was definitely not something I would have normally picked up.

It’s a powerful story, told from the point-of-view of a female slave. And even more interesting, a biracial slave. Pheby was a difficult character to connect with. She’d grown not really belonging to either side of her heritage: not accepted by her white slave owner father, and different than the other black slaves around her.

Her story is frankly, tough to read. It’s depressing; full of abuse and trauma, and feels hopeless at times. But despite all that, it was still an enthralling and interesting read. You’re still somehow left with pride; proud of how strong these characters are, and what they do to have the happiest life possible.

Yellow Wife was well-written and definitely worth a read.
