Queen B’s Decree: Fantasy is not a genre I often read, so I was hoping that Amethyst Pledge would grab my attention as a YA Fantasy.
And I think it would have, except for a mental block I seem to have. Kazari, our heroine, is called to serve the Lady and leaves her home to join the rest of those in service. It is there during initiation that she discovers that the Lady has called her to be a Hunter, the most dangerous role.
What I can’t get over is how much this felt like a cult. Kazari leaving her family, maybe never to return. All the pledges getting their hair buzzed off. Wearing a shapeless smock upon the ritual. I don’t know, the “magic” of the world didn’t counteract the uncomfortable feeling of forced religion to me.
And so I quit reading. I wasn’t interested enough in Kazari and their fantasy world to continue on after the weird vibes I had.
