Queen B’s Decree: I wanted to like The Caretakers. But I was so bored.
The Caretakers starts with the end—the death of a child and his au pair being taken into custody by the police. So here’s where you think: ooooo, there’s a mystery to be discovered!
So you start the next chapter, except it’s from the point-of-view of a different au pair who sort of knew the one from above. Then the point-of-view of their French teacher. Then the dead child’s mother, but it’s all before the event.
AND NOTHING IS RELEVANT.
More points-of-view until I finally got a hint of how Julien died, then I skipped forward to the two pages where it occurs. The Caretakers dragged on and each chapter felt so long. It was disjointed and monotonous. Each character had their own little backstory, which instead of being interesting, felt like filler.
I wish I could have enjoyed The Caretakers, but this one wasn’t for me.
