The Dancer and The Masks by Bea Paige

Queen B’s Decree: I’ve really enjoyed previous books by Bea Paige, but I had worried that The Dancer and The Masks might be too dark for me. I’m definitely more into gray, not so much into black. The DaTM straddled that fine line and won me over.

The storyline was very interesting (also creepy and gross?!?). The Masks’ father was known as The Collector, and what he collects is people. Leon, Konrad, and Jakub have been abused and brainwashed into submission, and that’s basically what they in turn do to the humans “collected.”

What. The. Fuck.

And then comes Christy, who is supposed to be the instrument of their revenge for their father’s death, and yet is their downfall.

Christy is such a strong character. She fights back and never gives up. The boys (men??) try to break her down but she’s stronger than all of them. And throughout it all, I kept hoping for some redemption. Each of The Masks—Leon, Konrad, and Jakub—have hidden depths and traumatic pasts. There was such a great mix of hate and love.

That ending…I immediately had to start the final in the duet. I couldn’t wait. Stay tuned for more.
