Queen B’s Decree: I freely admit that as I get older, I have more limits on what I’m willing to put up with. And When Sparks Fly hit my limit.
One of my least favorite tropes occurred in When Sparks Fly: the manwhore best friend hero. And something very early on in the storyline turned me off so much that I knew nothing Declan could do would redeem himself for me.
And thus, I officially DNF-ed. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: life is too short to read books you don’t enjoy.
Book: When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting
Series: standalone
Genre: Contemporary
Hotness: medium
Plot Devices/Tropes: friends-to-lovers
It’s so funny how different readers have different likes! This was a 5 star read for me – something about this really worked and it felt like a true friends to lovers, versus a lot where they are friends, but really one or the other has been secretly lusting after the other the entire time. This felt somewhat more realistic to me.
By the way, LOVE reading your reviews!
Aww thanks! It warms my heart that someone reads my word vomit. I can see your point of view, as I also hate the “unrequited love” trope. But Declan just seemed like an unreliable friend, and if I can’t respect him as a friend, I’ll never accept him as the romantic hero.
The older I get, the higher my standards for my main characters!
