Queen B’s Decree: Mr.Ultra Mega Love went in a different direction than I had been anticipating. Huff is a skinny nerd who was dealt with bullies his whole life, but when his sister is tragically murdered, he blames himself for being too chicken to help. Years pass and he’s still dealing with the aftermath of her murder when his best friend River convinces him to transfer to her college.
Once there he’s like a fish out of water. When a jock starts assaulting River, Huff finally steps up and protects his best friend like he wishes he could have done for his sister. During the scuffle, Huff is pushed into a contaminated pond and immediately grows some massive muscles. He basically turns into a super hero.
Mr. Ultra Mega Love felt darker and deeper than I was prepared for. Huff deals with grief, insecurity, and desire for revenge while navigating his newly realized feelings for his best friend River.
A deeper, but definitely interesting, read (don’t forget the snarky dialogue!) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff.
